Reading: Daily 5 will be a review of the expectations for groups and how to rotate to groups. Students will continue to identify the main topic and supporting details as well as ask and answer questions. Students will also identify the meaning of words from phrases. Students will read like texts and compare them (alike/different). We will also review cause and effect this week.  We will review the author's purpose. There will be a presidential theme in reading texts.

L.Arts: Fix it up: capital letters, punctuation, and spelling. This week we will introduce prepositions.

Writing Workshop: We will continue our focus on Opinion writing. We will continue to write reviews. What is important to include? How can I share all that I know about a place and give it a rating? Can I write a review on a video game? What about a book review?

Math: We will be building on our 2D shape knowledge by applying it to 3D shapes. What are the attributes for each? How can I put shapes together to make another shape? Vocabulary: face, vertices, edges

Positive Discipline: How can we show teamwork at school, home, and in our extracurricular activities? How do I solve problems with kindness and respect?

Social Studies: We will focus on map skills for this week. Students will go from right where they are city/county, all the way to the country we live in. Students will work on a “Me on the Map” book about locations in the world.

Valentine's Day Party
Our class will exchange Valentines during our party on Tuesday, January 14th from 1:30-2:15. (This celebration is for first grade students and teachers only.)

Students may bring in a home-made box to collect their cards in. Please bring completed boxes and cards to school on Tuesday, January 14th. I will also be sending a class roster home with the students so they know how to spell their classmate's names.

There will be a parent meeting regarding the first grade musical on Tuesday, February 7 at 9:45 in the music room. The first grade musical "Lemonade” will be presented by our first grade classes on Thursday, March 23. There will be three performances of the show. The performances will be 9:00 a.m., 10:15 a.m.., and 7:00 p.m. Mark your calendar with these special dates! The first grade students are going to present a great show!

Fantastic Savings Books are HERE!
We are off to a good start with our school fundraiser for STEM. The students are pumped up about selling coupon books. We need everyone to help us sell as many coupon books as possible. The proceeds will be used to purchase more STEM materials for student use. All students were sent home with flyers containing details on how to sell coupons.

Snack Reminders
Please be sure to send your child to school every day with a snack. Snacks should be quick and easy to eat, as we have five minutes for snack. Please be mindful of the sugar content in snacks and of our friends who have nut allergies. Thank you!

Six Flags Read to Succeed

Your child was sent home with a Six Flags Read to Succeed Student Reading Log. Keep track of your child’s reading with this log to qualify for a free ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia. Students must read and log 6 hours. Reading logs are due to Mrs. Skinner by February 10th, but may be turned in sooner if at least 6 hours are completed. I will distribute tickets in the spring when they arrive at school. If you need a new sheet, please let me know. Happy Reading!
