Phonics Family Words: didn't, wasn't, doesn't, couldn't, won't, it's, that's, where's, what's, here's

Phonics: contractions
Reading: Daily 5 with emphasis on beginning, middle and ending; finding evidence in text to support answer and retelling the story. What was the author's purpose? We will compare stories using a Venn diagram. Students will identify specific details in informational texts that describe characters, setting and events. 
L.Arts:  We will focus on suffixes -less, -est, -ful) 
Writing Workshop: Students will review informational writing and work on providing a new writing sample to show what they know about informational writing. We will be tying in research within our teaching books.
Math: Students will be learning how to tell time to the nearest hour and half hour. We will look at both digital and analog clocks. We will also be reviewing MAP skills to prepare for our upcoming spring MAP test.

STEM: STEAM Challenge WEEK. Students will have opportunity to design and build a structure using marshmallows and spaghetti noodles. What is important to think about in order to have a tall, standing structure? Happy Building! 
Positive Discipline: We are focusing on finding solutions to our problems and building teamwork and kindness within our classroom.

Dr. Seuss Day
First Grade will celebrate Dr. Seuss on Thursday, March 2nd. We will have a Dr. Seuss themed day where students can dress in red and black like the “Cat in the Hat” and participate in a “read-in.” Students may bring any Dr. Seuss books from home they would like to read during our “read-in.” 

Picture Day
Our class will participate in picture day on Wednesday, March 1st. If you have a student in 3rd-5th grade they will have their picture taken on Thursday, March 2nd. I look forward to seeing everyone's smiling face!

Our Ice Cream Social benefiting the RBES Media Center will be Tuesday, March 14th, 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the cafeteria. Please send in any of the following toppings and materials to the RBES front office, attention Jennifer Dollander.
Caramel, hot fudge, whipped cream, cherries, 2-liter bottles of Coke, gummies, Sour Patch Kids, M&Ms, Skittles, crushed Oreos, and any other fun toppings for ice cream.
Also, plastic spoons, paper bowls and Solo cups.

Mother-Son Event: Minute to Win It
Friday, March 3rd from 6-8pm in the RBES Gym
This event will feature minute to win it challenge stations set up for many participants to take part at one time. A team consists of a mother and son (or female adult participant with RBES boy). A light dinner will be served. The cost is $25 per team and benefits Relay for Life.



First Grade Musical Play
“Lemonade”
This musical play features fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters who are all having a bad day. However, with the help of Mother Goose they discover how they can learn to make the best of life’s ups and downs by trying to make the best of the situation.
“When the world gives you sunshine, don’t live in the shade-When the world gives you lemons...make lemonade!”

When: Thursday, March 23rd
Performances: 9:00 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Dress Rehearsal- Tuesday, March 21 during the school day
1.  All first grade students are in the play. Some first grade students from each class will be selected as speakers or dancers in the play. If your child is selected as a speaker or dancer, they must be present for the night performance.
2.  There will be opportunities for first grade parents to assist with the making of scenery for the stage after school. Scenery work days are:
February 16, 20, 23, 27
March 6,9,13, 16
Scenery work days are from 2:30-4:00 and if you plan to help please meet in the art room.
3.  Your child will need a white short-sleeve t-shirt and jeans for the play. There will be additional items added to this costume which will be at school.

Calling All 1st Grade Parents!

Ms. Granger needs volunteers to help with the 1st Grade Musical, "Lemonade!"  Help is needed with the scenery and costumes for this performance.  Workdays to help with scenery will take place on the following days:

Thursday, Feb. 16
Monday, Feb. 20
Thursday, Feb. 23
Monday, Feb. 27
Monday, March 6
Thursday, March 9
Monday, March 13
Thursday, March 16


If you are able to help, please come to the Art & Music rooms from 2:30-4:00 pm.  Children are welcome, and they can even help, so you can write a note for any school-aged children to stay after school on any day you are able to work.  You may want to bring your child a snack for after school.

We are also in need of some costumes for the following characters:

It is time for the RBES Spring Book Fair!  The dates for this exciting event are March 9, and 13-17. The Book Fair will be open March 9 and 13-16 from 8:00 AM until 2:30 PM, Tuesday night from 6-8 during the STEAM Night/Ice Cream Social, and on Friday, March 17 from 8:00 AM until 10:00 AM. Grandparents and special friends are invited to lunch and the Book Fair any day, March 9 and Monday-Thursday, March 13-16. The Book Fair provides students, parents, grandparents, and special friends an excellent opportunity to purchase great books that your children will love to read.  This is also a wonderful way to help support the RBES Media Center.  All proceeds go directly to the RBES Media Center.

Snack Reminders
Please be sure to send your child to school every day with a snack. Snacks should be quick and easy to eat, as we have five minutes for snack. Please be mindful of the sugar content in snacks and of our friends who have nut allergies. Thank you!
