Week of December 5-9, 2016

Week of December 5-9

Here’s a peek at next week!

Phonics- review from past weeks
Reading: Daily 5 implementation with emphasis on asking and answering questions about
details in texts (compare/contrast)We will be reading Mooselttoe and Grinch stories and
applying reading comprehension strategies (looking at non fiction texts and identifying text
features). We will also discuss and identify story elements. I will be working to assess kids one-
on-one in reading during the 3 weeks before the holiday break. More leveled readers will be
sent home after the break.  Please keep reading  Raz Kids, Headsprouts, and other books at
 home!

L.Arts: Fix it upSentence correction (capitalization, punctuation, does my sentence make
sense, plural/possessive noun, personal pronouns) How can I use conjunctions (FANBOY) and
 recognize nouns vs. verbs?
Writing Workshop: Reviewing “small moment stories” from quarter one. How do I write about
“one time” and “one place”? Can I improve upon my first quarter narrative writing?
Math: Implementation of addition and subtraction strategies through Christmas word problems,
number talks, and equation “scoots”. We will also be continuing our practice with our number
fact families.
PBL: Collecting, counting, and graphing items for our Chemo Care Packages. We will also be
making posters to advertise our cause and creating announcements to share on the school
announcement broadcast. Once we receive items, we will assemble our Chemo Care Packages
and write notes of encouragement to cancer patients.
Positive Discipline: Emphasis on “kindness” – How can we show kindness daily? Learning
how to solve our problems respectfully. Zones of Regulation – What are the differences between
small, medium, and large problems? How should I react to each?
 Homework
1. Practice your sight word list
2. Reading Passage – Winter  themed
3. Math Sheet - Fill in the missing Addends
4. Do a random act of kindness for someone!
5. READ!

We will be taking the math MAP test on Tuesday, December 6th at 9:30AM.  We hope to see the students' scores improve from when we took the MAP in August.
***Please make sure your child comes to school well-rested. A healthy breakfast also helps!

Six Flags Read to Succeed

Your child was sent home with a Six Flags Read to Succeed Student Reading Log. Keep track of your child’s reading with this log to qualify for a free ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia. Students must read and log 6 hours. Reading logs are due to Mrs. Ashley by February 10th, but may be turned in sooner if at least 6 hours are completed.
